Response to "Alone Together": An MIT Professor's New Book Urges Us to Unplug.
After reading the article "Alone Together", I was definately able to related to several Sherry Turkle's points. As I am blackberry users, I can strongly understand this statement "the little red light going off on the BlackBerry to see if you have somebody's validation."on blackberry. I believe that the red lights lead me to put my blackberry on desk instead of leaving my phone in my bag because without putting my phone on normal( sound on) I can still tell whether I receive message or not actually not only message, but also an emails and bbm(black berry messager). Also I had a experienced that while I was in class I saw a bit of red light from somewhere and my eyes and attention unconsciously went on my blackberry to check. To see my red light, I just noticed that I always put my phone on my left side to see the light conveniently because the red light is on right side of the phone and plus since I am both handed. If I was checking my assignment or homework this often, I would have become 4.0 student !
When I read her title and subtitle of her book, I was amazed how she describe it so correctly. She stated that "You're alone but looking for approval as though you were together" and ". We're raising a generation that has grown up with constant connection, and only knows how to be lonely when not connected." hit me so hard. I used to use and be on facebook very often however now I pretty much shut down all my information and I only go to facebook to play bejewled because even if I think facebook is one of great invention, it creates fake(not true feeling) cares between people. On facebook, some people just want to show off to have lots of connection so they just randomly adding people. I believe the worst part is that some people just saw some notification of birthday and wrote on their friends saying happy birthday but I actually they really don't mean it. I think this is very sad and shows that social network is taking over our physical interaction with people. I still do believe it is good invetion but people and I should know and learn how to balance it out to make better social life.
